Why Murktide defines Izzet

Izzet Murktide — the deck — runs a pile of one-mana cantrips, Ragavan, Ledger Shredder or Dragon's Rage Channeler, and a few copies of Murktide as the top end. You fill the yard, cast Murktide for cheap, and close with a 5/5 or 7/7 flyer. The card rewards playing the kinds of spells Izzet already wants: cheap, efficient, card-advantage-neutral or positive. Modern has shifted over the years, but Murktide has stayed. Boros Energy, Jeskai Blink, and other decks have had their moments; Izzet Murktide keeps showing up.

Printings and price

Murktide Regent has the original MH2 printing plus a Secret Lair. Foils from MH2 command a premium; the Secret Lair offers an alternate art. Murktide Regent — the Izzet Modern staple that refuses to quit

Urza's Saga from Modern Horizons 2 is a land that does three things: taps for colorless, creates Construct tokens that grow with your artifact count, and fetches a zero- or one-mana artifact. It's a Saga — it ticks up each turn and sacrifices after chapter three. But in that short life it tutors for Sol Ring, Shadowspear, Pithing Needle, Relic of Progenitus, or Mox Amber. In Modern, Legacy, and Commander, Urza's Saga is one of the most played lands. We're not calling a top or a bottom. We're laying out why this card matters.

What Urza's Saga does

Chapter I: tap for {C}. Chapter II: pay {2}, tap, make a 0/0 Construct that gets +1/+1 for each artifact you control. Chapter III: search for an artifact with mana cost {0} or {1}, put it onto the battlefield, shuffle. The Construct can get huge in artifact-heavy decks. The tutor finds the right tool for the matchup. In Modern, Hammer Time uses it to find Colossus Hammer or Shadowspear. In Legacy, it powers artifact strategies and even sees play in non-artifact decks that want a specific one-drop. In Commander, it's a staple in any deck that runs artifacts — EDHREC ranks it in the top 120 cards.

Play vs Draft — what you're really paying for

Play Booster boxes are the default for most stores and players. You get 36 packs of 14 cards, with a guaranteed rare or better in every pack and a chance at The List and other inserts. Drafting with Play Boosters is the norm for Lorwyn Eclipsed at FNM and Arena Direct events. Price per pack runs about $3.50–4.00 when you buy a box.

Draft Booster boxes, where still available, are usually $10–25 cheaper per box. You get 15-card packs tuned for draft; fewer rares per pack than Play, but a lower entry if you only care about drafting. Supply of Draft boxes has been shrinking as Wizards pushes Play Boosters, so if you want Draft-only product, check availability and price before they disappear.

Collector Booster boxes are the premium tier. You're paying for foils, alternate frames, Special Guests in every pack, and a lottery ticket at serialized Bitterbloom Bearer. Not for draft; purely for cracking or collecting. Price per pack is roughly $17–21. Lorwyn Eclipsed sealed product prices — Play Booster, Draft Box, and Collector Box compared

February 9, 2026 — Wizards dropped the first <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/banned-and-restricted-february-9-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Banned and Restricted announcement</a> of the year. Paper formats got a pass: Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper all see no changes. The action is on Arena. Historic gets four bans and seven unbans. Timeless restricts Necropotence. Alchemy gets 13 card rebalances. If you play digital, your deck might need a second look.

Historic — four out, seven back in

Banned: Eldrazi Temple, Ajani, Nacatl Pariah, Crop Rotation, Scholar of the Lost Trove. Play Design cited Eldrazi as the dominant high-rank strategy, powered by Temple and Ugin's Labyrinth; they banned Temple to keep Eldrazi playable without pushing out slower decks. Boros Energy lost Ajani. Crop Rotation enabled too much consistency for combo. And the Persist-into-Scholar line — reanimating Scholar of the Lost Trove as early as turn two and ending the game — was the most popular deck to reach Mythic in Best-of-One Historic. So Scholar is gone.

Unbanned: Magus of the Moon, Harbinger of the Seas, Force of Vigor, Force of Negation, Endurance, Wilderness Reclamation, Agent of Treachery. Historic has shifted toward higher power and more interaction; the format's early "no free spells, no land lock" philosophy is being relaxed so that answers can keep up. Expect more diversity and more games that don't end on turn two.

Timeless — Necropotence restricted

One change: Necropotence is now restricted. The classic black enchantment that lets you pay life to stock your hand was too dominant in Timeless. One copy still allows the archetype; multiples were warping the format. So you get one. We're not calling a top or a bottom on the card's price — it's a Commander staple regardless. Alchemy — 13 rebalances

Thirteen digital cards were rebalanced. The headliners: Kona, Rescue Beastie and Val, Marooned Surveyor got nerfed. Kona plus Omniscience was setting a turn-four (sometimes turn-three) deadline in Best-of-One Alchemy; Kona's mana cost went up. Val plus Trelasarra, Moon Dancer was the top creature combo in Historic; Val's cost went from two to four and the damage trigger was bumped to 2 per opponent (from 1) so she stays relevant in Brawl while dropping out of optimized Historic. The rest of the changes are a mix of buffs and tweaks: Dazzling Flameweaver, Marshland Hordemaster, Charged Conjuration, Tempest Trapper, Sanguine Soothsayer, Polterheist, Valiant Emberkin, Ethrimik Imagined Friend, Network Marauder, Prototype X-8, Sliver Weftwinder. Standard, Pioneer, Modern — no changes

Standard is in a good place. Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed had a Top 8 with seven different decks; Badgermole Cub is big but posted below 50% non-mirror win rate on Day One. Pioneer and Modern also see no changes. Legacy's Dimir Tempo is the top dog but within bounds. Vintage and Pauper are unchanged. So: paper stays as is; Arena gets the shakeup. Banned and Restricted February 9, 2026 — Historic hits, Timeless Necropotence, Alchemy rebalances

Lorwyn Eclipsed landed in late January 2026 — a full return to the plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, with Kithkin, Merfolk, Giants, Faeries, and the sun-and-moon flip between the two worlds. The set is 408 cards, legal in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Commander. Wizards packed in reversible shock lands (Lorwyn on one side, Shadowmoor on the other), a 20-card Special Guests bonus sheet with woodcut-style reprints, and a pile of reprints and new designs that had players and the secondary market paying attention from day one.

We’re not here to review every card. We’re here to give you a long look at the set through four cards that actually move the needle: the reprint everyone was waiting for, the Worlds championship card, the tribal engine that’s become a chase mythic, and the flexible elemental that’s finding homes in multiple formats. For each one we’ll show the card and then, below the article, you’ll find a price chart so you can see how the market has been treating it. What makes Lorwyn Eclipsed matter

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor were beloved for their tribes and their flavor. ECL brings that back with a twist: the plane’s duality is baked into the product. Draft and Standard get a shot of tribal and multicolor, and reprint hunters got some of the cards they’d been asking for for years. <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/collecting-lorwyn-eclipsed" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wizards’ own collecting guide</a> highlights the reversible shock lands, the Special Guests sheet (Bitterblossom, Goblin Sharpshooter, and others in woodcut art), and serialized Bitterbloom Bearer in Collector Boosters. 1. Bloom Tender — the reprint that had to happen

If you’ve been reading the Gazette, you already know we covered Bloom Tender when ECL dropped. It’s worth repeating here: this was the “reprint when?” card. A 1/1 Elf for {1}{G} that taps for mana of each color among your permanents. Commander players have wanted it forever. The original from Eventide (2008) and the Special Guests printing had kept the price high. Lorwyn Eclipsed finally put a standard booster version into the world — Nils Hamm art, no gimmicks, mythic in the set. Supply went up; the market reacted. The ECL copy is the one most people are opening and buying to play. Below you’ll see a chart for the Lorwyn Eclipsed printing. For this set review, the takeaway is simple: Bloom Tender is the headline reprint, and the chart tells you where the new supply landed.

2. Formidable Speaker — the Worlds card

Formidable Speaker is the championship card for Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, World Champion XXIX. It’s a 2/4 Elf Druid for {2}{G} that does two things: when it enters you may discard a card to tutor a creature into your hand, and for {1} and a tap it untaps another target permanent. So it’s a body, a potential <a href="https://edhrec.com/cards/formidable-speaker" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Commander</a> value piece, and a combo enabler (untap a mana dork or a land). The flavor text says it all: “Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, World Champion XXIX.” That kind of pedigree plus real utility means the card was a chase rare from the start. It’s not a reprint — it’s new to ECL — and the price has been strong. If you’re into competitive play or just want a copy of the Worlds card, the chart below shows you where the market has settled. 3. Chronicle of Victory — tribal payoff

Chronicle of Victory is a six-mana legendary artifact. As it enters you choose a creature type. From then on, creatures you control of that type get +2/+2, first strike, and trample — and whenever you cast a spell of the chosen type, you draw a card. So it’s a tribal lord and a card-advantage engine in one. In Commander it’s the kind of card that goes into any deck that’s heavily committed to a tribe: Elves, Merfolk, Giants, whatever ECL and your collection support. It’s been compared to Vanquisher’s Banner with extra upside. As a mythic in a set that’s all about tribes, it was bound to be one of the chase cards. The chart below is for the ECL printing. If you’re building tribal in Standard or Commander, this is one to watch — and the curve will show you whether the market is still discovering it or has already priced it in.

4. Wistfulness — the flexible elemental

Wistfulness is a 6/5 Elemental Incarnation for {3}{G/U}{G/U}. It has two enters-the-battlefield effects: if you paid {G}{G}, exile target artifact or enchantment an opponent controls; if you paid {U}{U}, draw two cards then discard one. It also has evoke {G/U}{G/U}, so you can cast it for the evoke cost, get one of the two effects, and sacrifice it. That makes it a flexible tool in Simic decks — a body when you need one, or a one-shot answer or card draw when you don’t. In Standard and Pioneer it’s been finding homes in midrange and ramp shells. In Commander it’s a solid value creature with a relevant body. As one of the elemental incarnation cycle in ECL, it’s been one of the set’s pricier mythics. The chart below is for the ECL version. Conclusion

Well, Lorwyn Eclipsed dropped, and Wizards finally pulled the trigger. The new printing is here — and the market is doing exactly what you’d expect.

We’re not here to pump the card. We’re here to report. So: the original Eventide (2008) version had been sitting in the “ouch” zone for a long time. Then Special Guests gave us a fancy alternate art. The three printings — and why they matter

Eventide (2008) is the original. It’s the one that made Commander players go “I need that.” Supply was tight for over a decade. Even after other printings, the classic frame and that Chippy art hold a premium. Foil Eventide? Don’t ask. (We’ll show you the chart instead.)

Special Guests gave us a gorgeous Julie Dillon take — New Capenna vibes, showcase treatment. It’s a premium product, so it never flooded the market. Prices held up. If you want the fancy version, that’s the one. If you want to play the card and not pay a fortune, that wasn’t it.

Lorwyn Eclipsed is the “finally, a normal one” printing. Standard booster availability, Nils Hamm art, no gimmicks. More supply usually means the new version trades lower than the oldest, rarest one — and that’s playing out. But demand is so high that the ECL copy is still carrying a real price. What we’re watching

Reprints don’t always kill a card’s price — and Bloom Tender is a format staple in Commander and beyond. The ability to tap for mana of each color among your permanents makes it a house in multicolor decks. So even with more copies in the wild, demand could keep the floor from falling out. That said, if you’ve been waiting to pick one up, the next few weeks might be the best window. Once the set’s been cracked for a while and the hype cools, we’ll have a clearer picture.

The Bloom Tender boom — reprint fever is real

Nobody asked for this take. Here it is anyway.

Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer is a 2/1 for one red that dashes in, steals the top card of your library when it hits you, and makes a Treasure. It's banned in Legacy. It's still the most wanted one-drop in Modern. Commander players run it in <a href="https://edhrec.com/cards/ragavan-nimble-pilferer" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tens of thousands of decks</a>. The monkey didn't ask to be printed. The monkey didn't ask to be the format. The monkey just does monkey things. And the price? *chef's kiss* Still not cheap.

This week in cardboard: we live in a society

You know the meme. "We live in a society where [something absurd]." We live in a society where a 2/1 monkey with dash is worth more than your dinner. We live in a society where Wizards printed it in MH2, then gave it a Multiverse Legends version, and the market said "cool, we'll take both." We're not telling you to buy or sell. We're telling you to look at the chart below and accept that the monkey won.

Hot take: Ragavan did nothing wrong (we're kidding, but look at the chart)

Modern Horizons 2 introduced the five evoke elementals: Solitude, Grief, Endurance, Fury, and Subtlety. They see play in Modern, Legacy, and Commander. Two that still show up everywhere — and have no reprint yet — are Solitude and Endurance. If you're tracking the set for value or playability, these are two to keep an eye on.

What they do

 <li>Solitude — 3/2, flash, lifelink. When it enters, exile target creature; its controller gains life equal to that creature's power. Evoke: exile a white card from your hand. One-shot removal or a body; white's answer to big creatures.</li>
 <li>Endurance — 3/4, flash, reach. When it enters, up to one target player puts all cards from their graveyard on the bottom of their library in random order. Evoke: exile a green card from your hand. Graveyard hate that can also beat down.</li>
</ul>

Both are single printings in MH2. No reprint has been announced, so supply is fixed for now. Demand stays high in Modern (blink, tempo, midrange) and Commander. The charts below show how their prices have moved. Toggle regular vs foil to compare.

Why they matter for the set

If you're opening MH2 or trading into it, these two are among the highest-impact mythics. Solitude answers creatures at instant speed and fits any white deck that can pitch a card. Endurance answers graveyard strategies and doubles as a threat. Neither has been reprinted, so their price history reflects only the MH2 supply. The chart below shows the data for each. Use it to see where the market has been — not as buy or sell advice.

Two MH2 elementals still worth watching — Solitude and Endurance

Seth Manfield won <a href="https://magic.gg/news/magic-world-championship-31-final-standings" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Magic World Championship 31</a> in December 2025. He did it with Izzet Lessons — the same deck that had been dominating Standard for months. He went 0–2 in draft, then 10–0 in Standard to make the Top 8, then 9–0 in games on Sunday. In the finals he beat Akira Shibata 3–0. Same deck on both sides of the table. That’s the kind of format dominance that gets people’s attention. So did the prize: $100,000, a Black Lotus trophy, and the promise that Manfield’s likeness will appear on a future Magic card. He’s now one of three players in history to win the World Championship twice, alongside Javier Dominguez and Shahar Shenhar.

Then the bans came.On <a href="https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/banned-and-restricted-november-10-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">November 10, 2025</a>, Wizards published the final banned and restricted announcement of the year. Standard got hit hard. Vivi Ornitier — banned. Proft's Eidetic Memory — banned. Screaming Nemesis — banned. Below, the three cards that left Standard.

The first two were the engine of the Izzet Cauldron deck that had put five or more copies into the Top 8 at every Standard Magic Spotlight event since rotation. Play Design didn’t mince words: the deck had “a strong fair game, efficient interaction, and a combo ceiling that other decks in the format can’t overtake,” with “no clear angle of counterplay.” So they removed Vivi (the Agatha’s Soul Cauldron combo piece) and Proft’s Eidetic Memory (the two-mana engine they compared to Up the Beanstalk, banned earlier in the year). Screaming Nemesis went too — not because it beat Izzet, but because Mono-Red was the only deck that could hang with it, and Wizards didn’t want red aggro to simply inherit the crown.

What it means for the market

We’re not here to call tops or bottoms. We’re here to report. The deck that won the biggest event of the year is no longer legal in Standard. The cards that spiked on the back of that deck are now format-illegal there. If you’re holding paper copies of Vivi, Proft’s Eidetic Memory, or Screaming Nemesis, your Standard demand just vanished; Commander and other formats still want some of these, but the narrative has changed. The same announcement hit Pioneer (Heartfire Hero banned), Legacy (Entomb and Nadu, Winged Wisdom banned), Pauper (High Tide banned), and Historic (Force of Negation, Frantic Search, Mystical Tutor, Entomb, and Dark Depths pre-banned). So it wasn’t just Standard. It was a broad sweep. Below you'll find price charts for the three Standard bans.

The takeaway

World Championship 31 was a great story — a comeback, a repeat champion, and a deck so good that the finals were a mirror match. But “so good” is exactly why that deck couldn’t survive. Wizards has said they’re moving to more frequent ban windows so they can react faster when one strategy takes over. So when you see a deck put five copies in every Top 8, don’t be shocked when a few key cards end up on the list. The Gazette will keep an eye on where those banned cards land in other formats. Until then — may your metagames be diverse and your combo pieces legal in at least one format you care about.

World Championship 31 — Izzet Lessons won it, then the hammer dropped

Cavern of Souls is a land. As it enters you choose a creature type. It taps for colorless or for one mana of any color — but that colored mana can only be spent to cast a creature spell of the chosen type, and that spell can’t be countered. So in tribal decks it’s mana fixing and a way to push your threats through countermagic. It’s been a Commander and Modern staple for years. The price had stayed high because reprints were rare. Then The Lost Caverns of Ixalan (2023) put it in a standard-legal set. Same card, new supply. The market reacted.

What the reprint did

LCI gave Cavern a normal booster printing. More supply usually means the new version trades at a lower price than the oldest printings — and that’s what happened. But demand is still high. Tribal decks in Standard, Pioneer, Modern, and Commander all want it. So the LCI copy found a floor; it didn’t crater. We’re not calling a top or a bottom.
