The world of Magic beyond the cards — art, playmats, events, and where to find them

Magic: The Gathering is more than a game. It's thirty years of illustrated worlds, iconic characters, and a community that plays in living rooms, at local game stores, and on the biggest competitive stages. If you've ever wanted to live a bit more in that world — as a wallpaper, a playmat, or just a deeper dive into where the art and events live online — here's a guided tour of links and resources that go beyond the card frame.

Why look beyond the cards?

Card art is printed small. The same illustration that appears on a 2.5" × 3.5" card often exists as a full painting or digital piece, and seeing it at size changes how you experience it. Playmats, wallpapers, and event coverage turn that art and that community into something you can use every day. Whether you're building a Commander deck, following the Pro Tour, or just love the visuals, these resources are worth bookmarking.

High-resolution art and wallpapers

For desktop and phone wallpapers, two hubs stand out. MTGPics.com is a long-running database of Magic card art: you can browse by set, artist, or card name and find high-resolution images suitable for backgrounds. DraftSim's MTG wallpaper roundup curates dozens of standout pieces — from Seb McKinnon's dreamlike Soulherder and Promise of Tomorrow to the vibrant Bitterblossom by Rebecca Guay, Chain Lightning, and the Theros gods — with direct links to large images. Many of these are the same art you see on cards, but at a size that does them justice.

Bitterblossom — art by Rebecca Guay
Bitterblossom — Rebecca Guay. Lorwyn's faeries in violet and fuchsia; a fan favorite for wallpapers and playmats.
Soulherder — art by Seb McKinnon
Soulherder — Seb McKinnon. A black hole, clouds, and cosmic scale; one of the most requested pieces for wallpapers.

Playmats — art you play on

Playmats turn card art into your gaming surface. Original Magic Art sells official playmats featuring classic and current art — from Gaea's Cradle to newer set pieces. Art of MTG catalogs playmat art by set and event (e.g. Grand Prix and Game Day promos), so you can see what's been printed and track down designs you like. If you're after a specific card's art on a mat, checking both the official store and your local game store or major retailers will cover most options.

Events and coverage — the Pro Tour and beyond

Competitive Magic has a home online. magic.gg is the official hub for Pro Tour and World Championship coverage: schedules, results, decklists, and articles. Recent events like Pro Tour Edge of Eternities and day-two highlights give you a written and visual sense of the tournament — who's playing what, how the meta shook out, and the kind of preparation that goes into the top tables. If you want to see the game at its most tuned and the community at its most focused, magic.gg is where to start. Wizards' official news rounds out product announcements, format updates, and organized play.

Promise of Tomorrow — art by Seb McKinnon
Promise of Tomorrow — Seb McKinnon. Sunset, souls, and atmosphere; another wallpaper staple from Commander Legends.

Card data and art — Scryfall

When you need to look up a card, see its printings, or grab a clean crop of the art (no frame), Scryfall is the standard. Every card has multiple image sizes, including an art crop — just the illustration, no text box or border — which is what we've used for the images in this piece. Scryfall's API and site are used by deckbuilders, content creators, and tools across the community. If you're building a custom playmat or wallpaper and want to reference the exact art from a given printing, Scryfall is where you get it.

Bringing it together

Magic's art and community don't stop at the card. Wallpapers from MTGPics and DraftSim, playmats from Original Magic Art and your LGS, and event coverage from magic.gg and Wizards give you more ways to live in the game. We're not telling you to buy anything — we're giving you the map. Bookmark what you like, support artists and official channels when you can, and enjoy the hobby from the table to the screen.
