Secrets of Strixhaven is fully spoiled, and the set is stacked. Prereleases start April 17, Arena and MTGO go live April 21, and paper hits shelves April 24. Magic's return to the magical university brings 368 main-set cards, a 195-card Mystical Archive bonus sheet, five Commander precons, and a cycle of double-faced cards that put iconic spells on the back of creatures. Here is the card-by-card breakdown of what matters most.

The Emeritus cycle: iconic spells on a stick

Emeritus of Ideation // Ancestral Recall — Secrets of Strixhaven Emeritus of Woe // Demonic Tutor — Secrets of Strixhaven
Ancestral Recall and Demonic Tutor — now on the back of Standard-legal creatures.

The signature mechanic of Secrets of Strixhaven is the Emeritus cycle — double-faced cards where the front is a creature and the back is a classic Magic spell. These are not reprints; they are new creatures that transform into the spells under specific conditions. The cycle includes:

  • Emeritus of Ideation // Ancestral Recall — $43.95 ($199.96 foil). A {3}{U}{U} Human Wizard on the front, {U} draw-three on the back. A serialized 1-of-500 chase variant exists, illustrated by Mark Poole as a callback to the original Ancestral Recall.
  • Emeritus of Woe // Demonic Tutor — $42.42. A {3}{B} Vampire Warlock on the front, {1}{B} tutor on the back.
  • Emeritus of Truce // Swords to Plowshares — $22.07. A {1}{W}{W} Cat Cleric on the front, {W} exile-removal on the back.
  • Emeritus of Abundance // Regrowth — $19.15. A {2}{G} Elf Druid on the front, {1}{G} recursion on the back.
  • Grave Researcher // Reanimate — $12.68. A {2}{B} Troll Warlock on the front, {B} reanimation on the back.

The Ancestral Recall and Demonic Tutor versions are the clear chase mythics. Having these Power Nine and iconic-spell effects attached to creatures that can be played in Standard creates a new design space that is both exciting and format-defining. The creatures need to transform to access the spell side, which means they are not free — but the payoff is among the most powerful effects ever printed in Standard.

The Elder Dragon cycle: five college deans

Witherbloom, the Balancer — Secrets of Strixhaven
Witherbloom, the Balancer — the most expensive Elder Dragon at $33.73.

Each Strixhaven college is represented by a Legendary Elder Dragon that doubles as the face commander of its respective precon deck:

Dragon Colors Price Foil
Witherbloom, the Balancer Black/Green $33.73 $45.00
Prismari, the Inspiration Blue/Red $29.52 $59.99
Lorehold, the Historian Red/White $27.65 $79.77
Quandrix, the Proof Green/Blue $24.77 $59.99
Silverquill, the Disputant White/Black $22.92 $59.99

Witherbloom leads in price, likely driven by the Golgari color pair's Commander popularity and the life-gain/drain mechanics the college is known for. Lorehold's foil at $79.77 is notably higher than its regular price, suggesting collector demand for the Boros Dragon specifically.

The Mystical Archive: Force of Will at $85

Force of Will — Mystical Archive, Secrets of Strixhaven Vampiric Tutor — Mystical Archive, Secrets of Strixhaven
Force of Will and Vampiric Tutor — the Mystical Archive's headline reprints.

The Mystical Archive returns with 195 cards — one guaranteed per Play Booster, three to four per Collector Booster. The final reveal alone contained $185 worth of reprints. The top ten by price:

Card Price Foil
Force of Will $84.68 $187.00
Vampiric Tutor $65.17 $154.99
Cyclonic Rift $46.29
Pyretic Ritual $30.93
Akroma's Will $26.11
Triumph of the Hordes $21.06
Ad Nauseam $19.19 $75.00
Armageddon $18.93

Force of Will at $85 in the Mystical Archive is a Commander and Legacy staple reprint that will be opened in significant volume thanks to the one-per-booster distribution. Vampiric Tutor at $65 is in the same category. These reprints put premium versions of format-defining cards into a Standard-legal product, which means the supply influx will be massive. Older printings of these cards may see price pressure downward, but the Mystical Archive art treatments will carry their own premium.

Planeswalkers and standouts

Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer — Secrets of Strixhaven
Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer — $28.32, the set's premier planeswalker.

Ral Zarek, Guest Lecturer ($28.32, foil $69.99) is the set's headline planeswalker — a {1}{B}{B} Ral variant that is clearly designed for competitive play given the aggressive mana cost. Professor Dellian Fel ($20.59) is a new planeswalker at {2}{B}{G} that fits the Witherbloom identity. Beyond the cycles, standout cards include:

  • Withering Curse — $21.65, a mythic sorcery
  • The Dawning Archaic — $20.08, a legendary Avatar
  • Splatter Technique — $19.99, a rare sorcery with Prismari flavor
  • Erode — $16.59, a rare instant that is likely seeing Modern interest given its price
  • Petrified Hamlet — $14.80, a rare land (lands at this price signal multi-format playability)

Five Commander precons

This is the largest Commander release of the year — five precons at $49.99 each (or $199.99 for the set of all five), one for each college. Each deck is helmed by its Elder Dragon. The 426-card Commander product includes exclusive cards not found in the main set. For Commander players, the Witherbloom and Prismari precons are likely the strongest buys based on the Elder Dragon prices and the historically popular color combinations.

What to watch at prerelease

With prereleases starting in five days (April 17), here is what to prioritize:

  • The Emeritus cycle cards are the money pulls. Opening an Ancestral Recall or Demonic Tutor back-face is the prerelease dream.
  • Every Play Booster contains one Mystical Archive card. Even if your main-set pulls are mediocre, a Force of Will or Vampiric Tutor from the Archive makes the event worthwhile.
  • The serialized Emeritus of Ideation (1 of 500) is the ultimate chase — a Mark Poole Ancestral Recall callback. Finding one at prerelease would be a moment.
  • Watch for Erode and Petrified Hamlet — rare-slot cards with prices suggesting constructed playability beyond Standard.

Prerelease is April 17. Paper launch is April 24. The Mystical Archive alone makes this the most reprint-dense set of 2026 — and the Emeritus cycle makes it one of the most mechanically ambitious. The charts below will track where these prices go from here.
